![]() ![]() After the war, Maupassant returned to Paris where Flaubert introduced him to other important novelists in the realist and naturalist schools, including Émile Zola, Ivan Turgenev, and Edmond de Goncourt. ![]() His education was interrupted by the outbreak of the Franco-Prussian war, during which time Maupassant served as an officer in the artillery corps. In 1867, he was introduced to the prominent French novelist Gustave Flaubert, who took the young Maupassant under his wing and encouraged him to study law in Paris. Maupassant demonstrated an early interest in literature as a high school student in Rouen, where he began writing poetry and acted in several plays. ![]() Guy de Maupassant was born to a wealthy family in Tourville-sur-Arques, France, in 1850. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() The idea of a woman leaving her husband and fending for herself and her children (Helen is an artist who sells her paintings) was shocking to contemporary society.Īnne Brontë (1820-1849). Basically, when they married they had little or no control over their own lives, children or property. My guilty pleasure, as will have dawned on you, is watching all sorts of period dramas. This is another book of which I watched the adaptation before I read it. It being more like a detective story than a romance novel, make it a must-read. ![]() The novel tackles weighty themes, especially women’s legal position in mid-Victorian Britain. Anne Brönte’s The Tenant of Wildfell Hall is in a way a typical love story but with many unpredictable twist. ![]() The plot centres on her and Gilbert’s developing relationship. Local farmer Gilbert Markham falls in love with Helen and defends her reputation, although he’s troubled by her relationship with her landlord who, unbeknownst to him, is her brother. Helen had married young but her husband was an alcoholic and adulterer and she’d left him to protect their young son from his baleful influence. Helen Graham, the eponymous tenant, is a mysterious new arrival in the neighbourhood about whom rumours soon abound. Indeed, she tackled subjects that were taboo for her time more openly and comprehensively than they did. Of the three Brontë sisters, Anne has always trailed behind Charlotte and Emily in the popularity stakes, which is a pity as her writing abilities equalled theirs. ![]() ![]() ![]() I have read other memoirs where Rob Lowe is mentioned. Stories are also relatable: being bullied as a kid, living in a divorced family Heĭishes about people but in a very classy way. Relationships with others, about his experiences on set, etc. He shares very personal stories about his Reading a story that was beautifully written. But he does talk about them and his experiences working with other celebrities. ![]() He does not trash talk other celebrities. Rob Lowe tells his life and it is not boring. Usually, when you pick up a celebrity memoir, you get not enough about their lives, too much about their lives, and/or they just trash talk other celebrities. Personal demons as well, including sobriety, partying, etc. Two projects that he talks in-depth about are his role in “The Outsiders” and “The West Wing.” I really enjoyed reading about his adventures on the set of “The Outsiders.” This is one of my favorite novels and movies as a teenager! He also talks in-depth about certain mentors with his career, including Martin Sheen. He talks a lot about his childhood growing up in Ohio vs. Rob has been in the business since he was 15 years old. WithĬlass, Rob talks about his family, other celebrities, and just everything in between. Well-written memoir about his life and work (up to the time of his book). Watching the show, I picked up his memoir. A huge fan of Rob Lowe until I watched the TV show Brothers and Sisters. ![]() ![]() This book has mega high ratings on Goodreads.
